Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans (USA) and took more than 1,400 lives, struck the city 12 years ago.
USAF Sergeant Mike Maroney was one of many doctors and rescues who were working in the catastrophe region at the time.
As Mike noted, they all toiled in appalling circumstances and travelled through the most impoverished regions, where a fresh threat awaited them: thieves who were extremely unkind and even hostile to people.
Naturally, the rescues started to loose their composure after a while.
The fact that Mike left his young boys at home, whom he missed terribly despite the fact that they were being cared for by cousins and didn’t have a mother, added to Mike’s difficulty.
On the seventh day of the rescue effort, a family was abruptly spotted on the top of one of the inundated homes by onlookers.
They had been attempting to live there for a week.
Only one young girl in a pink outfit was constantly smiling and waving to the rescuers while everyone else was very dejected and tired.
When they were able to save people, the young girl gave Mike a tight embrace, and he realised everything he had gone through was not in waste.
Ten years have passed. Mike made the decision to locate this lady after considering her frequently.
She had rescued him that day, so he wished to express his gratitude.
It proved to be a challenging job because all that was available from the information was a single photograph taken when the survivor said goodbye to the child.
In the end, Mike was fortunate because the Oprah Winfrey programme helped to find the child.
When he was already on the brink of going into depression, Mike praised her for rescuing him.
They gave each other a warm hug for the second time in their lives as they said farewell.
