As one ages, it’s nice to have family close by to help with some things.
However, most people would prefer not to depend on them for everything and maintain their independence.
An elderly lady named Merle returned to Victoria, Australia, to be near her family.
However, she also wanted to live in the comfort of her private home.
Her daughter, Ferne, a designer of small homes, took on the challenge of creating a home for her aging mother.
She has built many beautiful homes, but this one was special. It was for Mom.
The stunning 23.5 x 8 feet house was designed to meet the needs of the aging mother.
Wide entrances with ramps make the house extremely accessible and barrier-free for Merle.
Even the kitchen countertops were built with Merle’s height in mind.
The design also considered potential aging-related changes for Merle.
The walls are reinforced with handrails in case Merle needs something to hold onto for balance.
Ferne thought of everything when it came to the brilliant design of the house.
This beautiful terrace could be dismantled if they decided to move or sell.
But the gorgeous farmhouse offers such a beautiful view that it’s hard to imagine they would think of leaving.
Merle will never tire of the spectacular view.
It’s the cherry on top. Ferne also ensured that the roof and walls provide excellent insulation to make Merle’s winters as trouble-free as possible.
Screens have also been installed to prevent insect entry. After all, they are in Australia.
The main screen at the ramp entrance is motorized.
Merle just has to press a button to raise or lower it.
Ferne left the choice of colors and designs for the interior to Merle, so her mother truly felt like everything belonged to her.
The elderly mother opted for a wooden look, giving the house a sense of more open space.
Underfloor heating has also been installed since Ferne knew how important it is for the elderly.
Merle’s floor is flat and non-slip, allowing her to move safely wherever she wants.
A very cool feature is Merle’s bed. With a single click, the bed rises to the ceiling during the day.
The motor runs on a 12-volt battery with channels built into the wall.
Ferne incorporated cabinets into the walls, while drawers are placed in practical and easily accessible positions for Merle.
Merle finds it easy to navigate her home even with a walker.
Her bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom are all within reach, and she gets where she wants without stress, crucial for her age. Merle says the house is the best gift her daughter has ever given her.
Ferne has truly made her mother’s home her best work to date.
The design is impressive. It’s so practical yet so amazing that her elderly mother can still move with style.
Merle and Ferne both agree that everything is perfect—and we couldn’t agree more.
