The high cost of rent convinced this couple to build their own tiny house, and the result is stunning

A New Zealand couple named Lloyd and Kylee were hit by the continuously rising rental costs, so they decided to downsize and build their own tiny house in Auckland.

And the result? A home that works perfectly for this happy family of four!

Lloyd and Kylee watched tons of tiny house videos and visited some tiny house shows before starting the construction of their home.

This helped them realize that many of the things accumulated over the years were not really necessary.

The process was not a walk in the park.

It took five long years to rethink the plans for their tiny house and find a solution that was suitable for every family member.

The exterior walls of the 260-square-foot house were painted blue with white accents for the roof, doors, and windows.

The couple installed triple folding windows and doors that open the house to the outside and the spectacular countryside view.

The living area features a blue sofa that transforms into a bed.

There is also ample storage space under the ottoman and under the stairs, where the family keeps books and children’s toys.

The living room seamlessly connects to the fully equipped L-shaped kitchen, including an oven and dishwasher.

A feature in the kitchen is the unique blue quartz sink that Lloyd found at an online auction.

The area also includes plenty of storage space in the form of slow-closing cabinets with drawers and a small shelf above the sink, where they store their baking products.

Having two children, Lloyd and Kylee sacrificed part of their living room to build a spacious bathroom with a normal-sized bathtub, a floating sink, a washer, a dryer, and plenty of storage space.

The bathroom has a door leading outside, and Lloyd and Kylee hope it can serve as a back door when they build a circular deck.

Upstairs is their sleeping loft, which has a total of three rooms.

„We knew we needed privacy for our nearly nine-year-old daughter and naturally for the baby,“ Kylee said.

„She was quite young when we moved in, so we needed a space where we could close the door in case she cried at night.“

They also planned the house as future-friendly as possible, making the partition wall between the girls‘ bedrooms removable.

The second floor also has a screened corridor for the safety of their younger child, who will soon become a toddler.

The ceiling in Lloyd and Kylee’s bedroom is high enough for them to stand and move freely. Up there, a large window offers them a picturesque view outside.

The house itself cost NZ$152,000 (about US$105,000), but when adding the water tank, pump, and filtration system, they probably spent about NZ$160,000 (about US$111,000) – an amount lower than the deposit required for purchasing a traditional house in their area.

This beautiful tiny house is truly well thought out!
